California School of Herbal Studies
Founded in 1978 by Rosemary Gladstar, CSHS is one of North America's oldest centers for herbal education. Now under the ledership of owners Rebecca Maxfield and Jason Miller and program coordinator Autumn Summers. CSHS continues in the spirit in which it was formed by offering a multi-perspective approach to Earth-centered botanical studies.
Our goal at the California School of Herbal Studies is to empower individuals with the skills, confidence and experience needed by the community herbalist. Western Herbalism forms the base of the training, and Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine are introduced by guest teachers. Materia Medica focuses on North American and European herbs.
Successful graduates of our intensive program leave here with the knowledge they need to enter and contribute to the rapidly blossoming field of herbalism, and receive certificates of completion that are highly regarded by the herbal community.
Visitors to the school are welcome, but please call first so we can be sure someone will be available to greet you!

Northwest School for Botanical Studies
The Northwest School for Botanical Studies (NWSBS) offers two extensive programs including the 300 hour Professional Herbalist Training (PHT) Program and the Clinical Herbalist Training (CHT) Program; as well as classes for beginning and intermediate herbal studies. The PHT Program incorporates the following classes into the curriculum: herbal materia medica, physiology, herbal therapeutics, constitutional medicine, diagnostic skills, herbal pharmacy, kitchen pharmacy, field botany, gardening, aromatherapy, and clinical and business practicum. The emphasis of the materia medica is on the clinical uses of western plants, as well as the uses of some traditional Chinese herbs. Students will learn to identify plants in field and in the garden; although they are encouraged to cultivate their own gardens before they harvest plants in the wild. The kitchen pharmacy class trains students to incorporate the use of herbs into the diet, to maintain radiant health and vitality. The herbal pharmacy class includes many hours of “hands on” medicine making techniques and formulation; and provides instruction on many of the skills necessary to maintain an herbal pharmacy.
The Clinical Herbalist Training Program covers many case studies, treatment strategies, formulation, diagnostic techniques, pathophysiology, intake forms; techniques for creating a successful practice, and basic tools for practitioners to maintain their own health and vitality. Both the PHT and CHT programs emphasize a holistic and constitutional approach to foster client wellness. The Northwest School for Botanical Studies strives to provide the highest quality education possible to students who have a serious interest in pursuing herbal studies.

Sylvan Institute of Botanical Medicine
Sylvan Institute’s mission is to advance into the future those professions that include clinical botanical medicine as a modality. We at Sylvan Institute aim to deliver high-quality education that integrates the practical applications of medicinal plants from around the world by offering students web-based and hands on course work. Our vision is to educate health care professionals including Chinese medical practitioners, naturopathic doctors, medical doctors, Western herbalists, pharmacists, nurses, and anyone else who aims to use plants to alleviate suffering by providing both depth and breadth of information. We’re excited to have an opportunity to access practitioners we’ve long respected and to offer them a means of delivering detailed perspectives and protocols to a larger audience than they might otherwise have the opportunity to deliver as well as finally coaxing some of our favorite herbalists into the spotlight. Thus, this website is a website of herbalists and for herbalists, a venue for us to share information and resources. Included in all of the above, the Institute aims to bring awareness to issues of stewardship of medicinal plants, as well as the cultures from which they come, and educate our readers and listeners about issues of sustainability, conservation, and cultivation.
Since 1995, Benjamin Zappin and Thomas Avery Garran have led students to the mountains and deserts of California teaching them various aspects of plant ecology, preparation, and clinical usage of native medicinal plants. They jointly operated an herbal pharmacy, and collaborated on the second volume of Thomas’ first book, Western Herbs According to Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Practitioners Guide.
Independently, Benjamin and Thomas both got their original training in the United States, both in Western and Chinese herbal medicine.
It is our sincerest desire that the formation of Sylvan Institute of Botanical Medicine will draw from this shared history and deliver education that will benefit patients and professionals alike. We are grateful to have the opportunity to serve humanity by finding ways to bring botanical medicine forward, and thus, we dedicate our efforts in this joint venture to the plants themselves.

Botanical Medicine Institute
Founded by Dr. Les Moore, ND, MSOM, RH (AHG), LAc., the Botanical Medicine Institute (BMI) offers uniquely structured one-year and two-year certificate programs of class work and apprenticeships and a diploma program that allow students to begin their studies at any point in the yearly class cycle.
Each series of classes consist of six modules: Botanical Medicine/Single Herbs; Herb Pairs/Drug Interactions; Plant Identification/Herb Walk; Herbal Therapeutics; Herbal Medicine Making; and Herbal Formulas and Modifications. Each series contains different material.
Each of the modules are broken into three non-sequential chapters. These chapters are taught one per class series session (Fall, Winter, Spring). To get all of the information for a specific module, a student must attend the class for that module in Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Because the chapters are non-sequential, students may elect to start the certificate program studies at any of the three sessions offered. The certificate will be completed when they have taken all three chapters for each of the six modules.
Students interested in more in-depth studies or a career related to herbal medicine, will be interested in our Diploma of Botanical Medicine program. The Diploma Program, which includes an apprenticeship in our clinical setting, is available to students that have completed two years of the Certificate Program, or advanced students from other programs.
The certificate program draws mainly from Western botanical medicine, but also examines the expanding pharmacopeia of global herbal medicine traditions, including tracks concentrating on Asian herbal medicine studies such as Ayurveda and Chinese herbal medicine.
Upon completion of the certificate program, students will receive a certificate and may elect to continue their studies with an apprenticeship with Dr. Moore and BMI herbalists. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, each student receives and Advanced Botanical Medicine certificate. Upon completion of the Diploma Program, students will receive a Diploma of Botanical Medicine. Students may also elect to take single classes as opposed to the entire year program.
The Botanical Medicine Institute is located at the Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic in the historic village of Clifton Springs, New York, which has been a center of healing and health care traditions for more than 160 years. The Botanical Medicine Institute is proud to continue and expand upon these rich traditions.
