BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies

The BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies offers herb seminars, in-depth training programs, field studies, hands-on wild crafting, medicine making workshops, and mentoring for student practitioners. In addition we frequently sponsor seminars taught by other herbal practitioners. After more than 22 years, our stellar reputation derives from the consistently well-organized, interactive and stimulating learning experiences we provide our students.

Located in a small town in the beautiful mountains of northeast Georgia (100 miles northeast of midtown Atlanta, and 90 miles southwest of Asheville, NC), we are surrounded by the vast wildness of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Most of our seminars highlight the use of the native and naturalized plants that contribute to the Southern Appalachians Mountains as the apothecary of North America.

Once a year we offer a comprehensive training in the foundations of herbalism in our Herbal Studies Certification Program that meets one weekend a month from March to December.

Patricia Kyritsi Howell, RH (AHG), founder and primary instructor, is the author of Medicinal Plants of the Southern Appalachians (2006) and is a clinical herbalist in practice for more than 22 years. Other instructors include Lorna Mauney-Brodek (medicine making) and Carrie Radcliffe (botany).

Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine

The Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine is located in the botanically rich Appalachian Mountains, just outside of Asheville, NC. Our passion for healing plants, herbal education, and medicinal gardening is at the heart of all our teachings. We offer several online opportunities to learn, including the Herbal Medicine Making Course and the Herbal Immersion Program. The Online Herbal Medicine Making Course will give you the know-how and confidence to create an abundant apothecary. The hands-on instructional videos and photographic tutorials are chock-full of personal experience and insider tips, along with a hearty dose of silliness. In the Online Herbal Immersion Program, you’ll learn all about herb cultivation, medicine making, and therapeutic uses for each featured herb. In a nutshell, the course has two equal and integrated parts: How to grow medicinal plants and how to bring their medicine into your daily life. Both courses weave together video instruction, written lesson plans, and experiential learning. Just as locally grown food is key to long-term sustainability, locally grown medicine is equally as important. That’s why our programs focus on growing your own herbs and all the ways you can enrich your life with edible and medicinal weeds. Our connection to plants as medicine nourishes this ancient spirit and wakes us up to the profound natural cycles of life. We’re honored to share that connection with you, and we hope it brings you as much joy as it brings us.

We practice and teach holistic Western herbalism in the vitalist tradition, integrating herbs, nutrition, movement, and stress management strategies to support the innate human capacity for healing and growth.

Our 9-month Apprenticeship Program is a complete course in practical herbalism for beginning and intermediate students, including: history and philosophy of Western herbalism; basic [patho]physiology and therapeutics for all major systems of the body, with relevant materia medica; primal nutrition, food intolerances, medicine-making (tea, tincture, infused oil, salve, etc); basic formulation; plant identification and wildcrafting skills; and foundational energetics (constitutions, tissue states, and herbal actions).

For those interested in pursuing herbalism as a profession, we offer an additional two years of advanced training. The Advanced Studies Program focuses on advanced pathology (cancer, insulin resistance & diabetes, chronic fatigue, lyme disease, and other chronic diseases), herb safety and herb-drug interactions, detoxification protocols, advanced materia medica and formulation, and clinical skills. Dogwood School of Botanical Medicine

The Dogwood School of Botanical Medicine (DSBM) was founded in 2012 by veteran herbalist Todd Caldecott, former clinical director of Wild Rose College (2000-2004), and author/editor of several books including Food As Medicine, Ayurveda: The Divine Science of Life, and Ayurveda In Nepal. With 20 years of clinical and educational experience in both North America and abroad, as well as several years serving on the Admissions Review committee for the American Herbalists Guild, our founder Todd Caldecott understands well the needs and requirements of students and practitioners. These experiences led him to create the DSBM Mentorship Program, which allows students with otherwise busy lives to flexibly pursue the highest level of natural health education, utilizing a combination of distance learning tools, webinars, personal consultation, learning adventures, and group intensives. Too often academic programs fill the student’s head with facts and details, but very little practical understanding of how to approach the field of preventative and natural medicine. The DSBM Mentorship Program aims to change this paradigm, and restore a millennia old tradition of imparting knowledge on a more direct, personal basis, that better accommodates natural learning.

The core components of the DSBM Mentorship program include:

  • Inside Ayurveda
  • Food As Medicine
  • Phytomedica
  • Ayurveda in Nepal study program
  • Group Intensive program
  • Clinical internship

Dominion Herbal College

Dominion Herbal College (DHC) is North America’s oldest school of Herbal Medicine. Founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1926, it has been the inspiration of many great American and International Herbalists. Dr. John Christopher, Dr. Bernard Jensen, Jethro Kloss and Dr. Earl Mindell are only a few of the renowned graduates who got their start in Herbal Medicine with DHC. DHC provides the best source of herbal studies from the basic to clinical levels, educating students to become competent in the field of Herbal Medicine. DHC is accredited by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA) of British Columbia, Canada.

The Chartered Herbalist Diploma Program is the original introductory level program of Herbal Medicine with thousands of students and graduates around the world. It provides a basic understanding of the human body and use of herbal therapeutics. The program includes Anatomy & Physiology and Materia Medica incorporating approximately 200 western herbs and encompassing botanical description, distribution, cultivation, harvest, constituents, properties, formulae & dosages and contraindications. This 1-year program utilizes a distance learning delivery method in which the program is completed by traditional, self-directed home study.

In 1989, in order to meet the growing demand for advanced herbal studies, the Clinical Herbal Therapy Diploma Program was developed to enable individuals with a strong sense of vocation to practice as a Clinical Herbal Therapist. Also introduced at this time was the Clinical Herbal Therapy Diploma Program Specially Structured for Health Care Professionals at the Physician Level. This vocational program in the art and science of Herbal Therapeutics provides a comprehensive system of training on how the body functions in health and illness, how herbs can affect the functioning of the body, how to assess an individual’s relative state of health and how to choose the correct herbs to treat different ailments. This 4-year program utilizes a combined delivery method of distance and onsite learning in which the course work is completed by traditional, self-directed home study together with onsite attendance at a 5-day seminar at the end of each academic year, completion of 510 supervised clinic hours at Dominion Herbal College Approved Clinics during Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 and a Final Practical Clinical Exam at the end of Year 4. Dominion Herbal College approved student training clinics are currently located in British Columbia and Ontario, Canada.

East West School of Herbology

The East West Courses are a unique combination of Western, Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese herbology. Many of the graduates of our 36 Lesson Professional Herb Course program have obtained Registered Herbalist status in the American Herbalists Guild (AHG). This is important since the AHG is the only professional clinical herbalists organization in North America.
Herbal medicine in North America has grown from an off-beat interest promoted by a handful of non-mainstream adherents, to an 8 billion dollar a year mainstream business -- and it's still growing. Increasingly we see professional medical practitioners including medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, chiropractors, acupuncturists to non-professional lay persons exhibit a keen interest in herbal medicine prompted at the behest of their patients. The reason is clear: Herbs work. For this, there is no dispute even by those who would be normally critical of so-called 'alternative medicine.' As a result, there is an urgent need for qualified people in the growing professions of clinical herbology, herbal pharmacy, herbal research, herb cultivation and wildcrafting, herbal marketing and product development.
Throughout the last several decades Michael Tierra and the East West School of Herbology have been in the forefront of the herbal renaissance, promoting its widespread growth and acceptance throughout the Western world. To increase the standards, credibility and acceptance of clinical herbalism, in 1989 Michael founded the American Herbalists Guild.
There is no shortcut to mastery. Courses and schools that purport to offer 'master herbalist' (MH) or other misleading degrees, often based on a 'quickie' weekend or a single week-long workshop, have no guaranteed legal professional standing. Be that as it may, there is a growing number of professional herbalists throughout North America. Many of these are graduates of the East West Herb Course, which represents a comprehensive and thorough herbal training program. (See the "Student Profiles" on the bulletin board). Our graduates are confident and competent herbalists!
Remember; one can learn hundreds of herbs, but that knowledge is clinically worthless without its integration into a traditional system of diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, only the East West Herb Course systematically integrates the three main systems of herbal medicine based on the traditional practice of Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic (East Indian) herbal medicine.
We believe that herbal medicine is not simply another profession, but an inspired calling. It is to this inner calling, as well as the increasing numbers of students who feel drawn to the study of herbal medicine, that we dedicate our teachings. If you are one of those who feel such inner promptings, come journey with us down this heartfelt path of wonder and learning. A wise person once said that whatever energy is expended towards education is never lost. Enroll in one of our courses today and let it serve as your guide on your personal 'Way of Herbs.'

ECLECTIC SCHOOL OF HERBAL MEDICINE

What kind of herbal school are you looking for? If you answered one with a clinical focus, our programs might be exactly what you are looking for. Our founder and head instructor has been seeing clients for well over a decade, having a practice in Alabama, Florida, and now North Carolina. Thomas Easley’s experiences, and passion for teaching others how to approach clients in a clinical setting, are the main driving forces behind our mission here at Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. We want to give you the herbal skills in clinical nutrition, functional medicine, and traditional western herbalism to leave the program feeling confident in pursuing your practice as an herbalist. Eclectic /iˈklektik/: Adjective; deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. Not so long ago there was a group of doctors in America that practiced Eclectic Medicine. They were physicians who employed whatever was found to be beneficial to their patients. Eclectic Medicine was formed in opposition to the toxic remedies used by standard doctors in the 19th and early 20th century. Eclectics didn’t care who discovered the remedy, if it worked they used it. Be it botanical, homeopathic, mineral or occasionally chemical medicines to bring balance to the body. Our school teaches students to use what works, no matter what tradition it comes from. With a strong grounding in both modern science and Traditional Western Herbalism, Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine offers both online and in-person educational opportunities.

If you are interested in becoming a strong grounded clinical herbal practitioner give us a call today.

Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine Online
Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine is offering online classes presented as individual modules. While these education opportunities are available as individual classes, we will still offer three certification courses. All classes will be taught live and available at that time for attendance. They will also be recorded and available for later purchase. Over the course of the next 2 to 3 years, all required course material for certification will be presented, recorded and accessible for purchase through our online classroom. There are also live-hands on classes scheduled for each tier. Not all are required. With each module you will gain access to readings, recordings and a forum to ask questions and access additional information.

Onsite Full-Time Program
The intensive is an eleven month live-in program, although commuting is welcome. Our lodging options are shared dorms, private rooms or cabins. Although our accommodations contain modern amenities such as a bathhouse and laundry facilities, you’ll still feel like you’re living in the wilderness. Our herbal studies program is hosted at Wellspring Mountain, a 497-acre camp tucked away into a mountainside of the Blue Ridge in a small town called Lowgap, North Carolina. Over 90% of the land is set aside for plant preservation and land conservancy.

Distance Learning Opportunity
This is our full-time program live-streamed in real time, for those who are not able to join us for the full eleven month onsite program. In this program you will have access to live-chat and full access to the live online classroom and forums. Our live-streamers have the flexibility to come to as many classes as they would like.

Florida Holistic School of Health

"Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also love of humanity." - Hippocrates

The Florida Holistic School of Health is dedicated to preserving many of the lost arts and ancient healing modalities that have kept families healthy for centuries. Our courses are formulated by Master Herbalist Donna McGee. Gladstar's style of teaching a breath of fresh air, but Donna still wanted a more clinical study so she could teach others how to make their own herbal medicines. In 1989, Donna enrolled in The School of Botanical Medicine in Orlando FL.
