Appalachia School of Holistic Herbalism

ASHH provides sound technical training in holistic healing with a focus on preventative lifestyle. Holistic healing aims to do no harm to the planet in realization that there is no separation between that which we do to ourselves and that which we do to the whole. Holistic health supports the well being of the entire person: mind, body, and spirit.

Students are educated and empowered to cultivate deep wellness within themselves and others using hands, heart, nature, and plants. In a society more familiar with corporate logos than backyard plants, it is imperative that we reclaim the innate wisdom of identifying, honoring, and utilizing the plant kingdom. The earth’s bounty is always reaching out to us, offering its aid to restore us to vitality.

Learning in nature and through nature at ASHH, on our thirty-acre campus, connects the student to the roots and essence of Herbalism. Through the study of medicinal plants and holistic living skills, we return the ancient art of healing to the individual and to the family, rebuilding conscientious communities and embracing our divine potential.

We must learn to love and care for the Earth as we would our own children. In doing so, we find this nurturance becomes our nourishment. This is why, at ASHH, we offer classes for children as well as beginning, intermediate, and advanced adults.

ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism

ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism is rooted in the holistic practice of herbal medicine and is conveniently located in New York City. Founded and directed by herbalists Claudia Keel and Richard Mandelbaum, RH (AHG), ArborVitae offers a full professional program, including a one year standalone program and a complete three year program for those wishing to pursue clinical herbal knowledge and practice. The core curriculum is consistent with AHG educational guidelines. Visiting faculty include top herbalists from around the world.

The 1st year curriculum offers a comprehensive introduction to the art and science of herbal medicine, and stands as a strong foundation for further studies or as a basis for effective and knowledgeable home practice. Topics include: Medicine Making & Materia Medica; Holistic Assessment, Methods & Energetics; Body Systems, Bioscience & Western Medicine; and Botany & Plant Identification. The advanced 3 year program consists of the foundational year plus more clinically focused years 2 and 3, providing over 1100 hours of classroom instruction & clinical training. Qualified applicants can enter directly into year 2 or 3. Topics include a Supervised Student Clinic; Applied Body Systems & Herbal Therapeutics; Botanical Actions, Formulation & Application; and Holistic Intakes with Pulse & Tongue Evaluation.

ArborVitae draws upon the best of what New York City has to offer: excellent herb teachers from varied practices, diverse student and client populations, amazingly botanically diverse city parks and gardens, friendly herb shops, mugwort everywhere, and lots and lots of humor. We frequently take trips to visit the wild places within and outside the city, where we identify plants, indulge in the silence, and enjoy a school-wide camping trip. All of our teachers are practicing herbalists and teach from their direct experiences and observations. Our low-cost community herb clinic, staffed by our 3rd year clinical students under supervision of faculty, provides services both on-site and during fieldtrips to visit local NGOs, with mutual sharing of herbal knowledge and traditions. We also offer community classes throughout the year to support our mission of being a progressive community resource for increasing public access to comprehensive herbal knowledge and care.

ArborVitae is dedicated to the memory of the herbalist William LeSassier, and honors his wisdom and teachings.

Bellebuono School of Herbal Medicine

The Bellebuono School of Herbal Medicine is one of the most welcoming and popular programs for beginner, intermediate and advanced herbalists and for any health care practitioner or professional who wants to include plant medicine in his or her practice. Directed by award-winning herbalist, apothecary director, teacher, national speaker, and author Holly Bellebuono, this program introduces students to the beauty and function of herbs for medicine with a focus on herbal formulary by body system. Successful completion confers a certificate and credential, and the rigorous formulary-and-pharmacology-based curriculum has been especially useful for herbalists, wellness coaches, naturopathic students, botanists, pharmacists, midwives, ecologists, women’s specialists, and alternative healers.

We offer 3 programs:

1) THE 2-WEEK HERBAL INTENSIVE on Martha's Vineyard. Every Summer we host a delightful and engaging 2-week training and certification intensive for intermediate and advanced learners. The 2017 Intensive will take place June 22 - July 6 (Early Bird Registration ends March 21 2017). This fantastic learning opportunity on the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard teaches the herbal curriculum in a dynamic small-group setting for an engaging exploration of all herbal medicine has to offer. We meet in a casual and supportive environment to study plant ID, harvesting, processing, apothecary, case studies, jurisprudence, and more--with an emphasis on herbal formulary. With its in-depth focus on how herbs work in the body (the curriculum is organized by body system), the 2-Week Intensive also includes hands-on experience processing a variety of folk remedies (the 4-Day Apothecary Weekend). Students also participate in multiple herb walks, field trips, and garden explorations around the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard, as well as kitchen processing, pharmacology and physiology based on the body's primary systems (respiratory, reproductive, digestive, etc.). Our studies include the heritage and folklore of healing, the philosophy of healers from around the world, and more. If you want to deepen your understanding of herbs and how they work in the body--and to learn how to apply herbal formulary in family and community settings-- this is the course for you. Every year this is a very well-received program that strengthens students' abilities and builds community.

Pre-requisite: intermediate experience/education in either plants (gardening, farming, botany, etc.) OR healthcare (nursing, midwifery, herbalism, etc.)

Certificate Earned: Community Herbalist Certificate

Tuition: Early Bird: $2,295 (until March 21). Normal Tuition: $2,495 (until June 1)

Housing: Beds are available at our Herbal HQ, a fantastic and comfortable house where we hold most of our classes and workshops. The house is in walking distance to West Tisbury post office, grocery store, bank, pharmacy and pizza place and we offer both small beds ($700/2weeks) and king beds ($980/2weeks), which is some of the most affordable summer housing on the island. Past students have loved living in the Herbal HQ as it creates a unique and friendly environment and makes classes and coursework very convenient.

Note: This is an intermediate program, not an advanced clinical program. We do not cover diagnosis, cancer, or diabetes. It is, however, a comprehensive introduction to the complex how and why of herbal healing and pharmacology.

2) THE 4-DAY APOTHECARY WEEKEND. This is a fun, hands-on workshop designed for beginners and also for health care professionals who already understand healing and medicine but are new to plants. This is automatically included in the 2-Week Herbal Intensive, and it can also be taken as as a stand-alone workshop. Dates: June 22 - 25 2017. $595.

3) THE DISTANCE/ON-LINE PROGRAM. Enroll any time and complete the course from your own home. This option is a 7- month self-paced curriculum for beginners with an emphasis on Holly’s 4-Tier Philosophy of Formulary. It consists of 19 lessons (divided into 3 sets) based on men’s and women’s body systems as well as Hands-On Apothecary Assignments using a variety of plants and techniques. BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies

The BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies offers herb seminars, in-depth training programs, field studies, hands-on wild crafting, medicine making workshops, and mentoring for student practitioners. In addition we frequently sponsor seminars taught by other herbal practitioners. After more than 22 years, our stellar reputation derives from the consistently well-organized, interactive and stimulating learning experiences we provide our students.

Located in a small town in the beautiful mountains of northeast Georgia (100 miles northeast of midtown Atlanta, and 90 miles southwest of Asheville, NC), we are surrounded by the vast wildness of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Most of our seminars highlight the use of the native and naturalized plants that contribute to the Southern Appalachians Mountains as the apothecary of North America.

Once a year we offer a comprehensive training in the foundations of herbalism in our Herbal Studies Certification Program that meets one weekend a month from March to December.

Patricia Kyritsi Howell, RH (AHG), founder and primary instructor, is the author of Medicinal Plants of the Southern Appalachians (2006) and is a clinical herbalist in practice for more than 22 years. Other instructors include Lorna Mauney-Brodek (medicine making) and Carrie Radcliffe (botany).
